Premiere Pro

Final Cut Pro.
Premiere Pro.

(Unlisted)

Long-Form YouTube Video Production: Starter Guide, Editing Software and AI (2026)

Long-Form YouTube Video Production: Starter Guide, Editing Software and AI (2026)

Long-form YouTube video production means making videos from a few minutes to tens of minutes long that invite the viewer to watch to the end and come back. For steady channel growth, being found in search and reaching income, this path matters more than anything else. But beginners usually get stuck at the same place: where do we start, which software should we edit with, where does AI help, and where does it cause trouble?

This guide answers those questions. To prepare it we used the official YouTube Creators guide, the YouTube Help page on chapters, the sites of the software makers and several specialist English articles on video structure and audience retention. Wherever a figure or claim comes from a source, we credited it, and the full list of English sources is at the end. Tools and prices change quickly; check the maker’s site before buying.

At a glance:

  • Starting right means choosing a niche in one sentence, studying 5 similar channels and committing to make 10 videos, rather than judging after the first video.
  • A phone is enough to start; audio quality and light matter more than the price of the camera.
  • Every long video needs a 15-second hook, early value, constant changes of pace and chapters.
  • For editing: DaVinci Resolve (free and powerful), Premiere Pro (subscription), Final Cut Pro (Mac only), Descript (text-based editing) and YouTube Create (free to start).
  • AI is excellent for ideas, scripts, removing filler, captions and repurposing; but making the whole video with it risks ‘inauthentic content’.
  • At the end, leave your number for a free consultation on starting your channel.

Why long-form video?

Shorts is great for quick discovery, but a long video is where the viewer gets to know you more deeply and becomes loyal to your channel. Some concrete reasons to invest in it:

  • Watch time: For new channels, the long-form route is measured by watch hours. Under the new requirements from Bahman 12, 1405, new channels need 8,000 watch hours (or 20 million Shorts views). See the details in new YouTube monetization requirements 2027 and filling YouTube watch time.
  • More income per video: Videos that reach 8 minutes can carry mid-roll ads, which is one reason creators find long video more profitable. For income calculations, see how much does YouTube pay?
  • Search and a long life: A good tutorial earns views for years through search, while Shorts views usually fade quickly.
  • Trust and sales: If you have a service or a course, 10 to 20 minutes of talking with your audience builds far more trust than 30 seconds.

Of course Shorts and long video are not rivals; Shorts can lead the audience to a long video. But if you choose only one, starting with long video makes more sense for real growth and income.

Where do we start? A 7-step map

vidIQ’s beginner guide and YouTube’s official guide share one message: start simple and do not wait for perfect conditions. Let us go through this path step by step.

Step 1: Write your niche in one sentence

vidIQ suggests defining your niche in one sentence that specifies three things: the target viewer, the result they get and the repeatable type of video. For example: ‘I help new school teachers make 10-minute video lessons with a phone.’ If you cannot write the sentence, you are not ready to record. For choosing a high-income niche, also see 10 high-paying YouTube niches.

Step 2: Study 5 similar channels

Note their audience, repeated topics, the most-viewed videos and the questions repeated in comments. The goal is not to copy; you are looking for a gap you can keep filling. vidIQ stresses not looking for ‘an idea nobody has said’, but for an angle you can continue consistently.

Step 3: Set a goal of ’10 videos’

Instead of judging after one video, make 10 videos for one type of viewer and treat each as an experiment. vidIQ cites a study of more than 448,000 channels and, according to it, about 57.8 percent of long-form channels got at least one of their first ten videos past 1,000 views within 30 days. Take this number on trust from the source, but the message is clear: the first 10 attempts are worth it.

Step 4: Set up the channel properly

  • Create the channel with a Google account and choose a unique name and @handle.
  • In YouTube Studio, verify your phone number. According to YouTube’s official guide, without verification you can usually upload only videos up to 15 minutes; with it, longer videos (up to 256 GB or 12 hours) and custom thumbnails become available.
  • Turn on two-step verification.
  • Add a profile picture, a clear banner about the channel’s topic and a description of 2 to 3 sentences; for color and visual identity see designing the channel’s visual identity.

Step 5: Find ideas and a keyword

Every video must answer a real question. We explain the exact way to find an idea and a search phrase in how to find ideas and keywords for a video. For each idea write: who it is for, what they learn and what your angle is.

Step 6: Build a steady publishing plan

vidIQ treats one video a week as a practical starting point and points to a study of 10.2 million channels in which more frequent publishing was usually associated with more growth. More important than the number is consistency. For planning, see building a content calendar for your channel.

Step 7: Upload the first video as Unlisted first

vidIQ recommends uploading the first video as Unlisted, checking on a phone that the title, thumbnail, captions and audio are right, and then publishing or scheduling it.

Minimum equipment to start

In its creator guide YouTube explicitly says you can start with a phone or a webcam. What really matters is clear audio, good light and delivering the value you promised in the title.

Equipment Minimum needed Later upgrade
Video A smartphone with a rear camera, in landscape A mirrorless or similar camera
Audio A phone near your mouth in a quiet room, or headphones with a microphone A lavalier or USB microphone (the first upgrade priority)
Light Sit facing a window with natural light A soft LED light or softbox
Stand A tripod or a stack of books; keep the camera steady A professional tripod and a microphone stand
Software YouTube Studio and YouTube Create (free) DaVinci Resolve or Premiere Pro

For a fuller list, read equipment needed for professional editing and 10 essential tools for content creators.

Structure of a professional long video

A long video is not just ‘a short video stretched out’; it needs structure. The map below is built from the summary of YouTube’s official guide, Subscribr and LongStories, and suits a video of about 10 minutes.

Section Approximate time What this section does
Hook 0 to 15 seconds Show the result, name the problem or put the most exciting moment first. No long logo and no long hello.
Short intro 15 to 35 seconds State the topic in one sentence and give a roadmap. Save your own introduction for later.
Main body 35 seconds to about minute 9 Deliver the main value early. Split the content into sections of 2 to 5 minutes with clear titles, and put an open loop between sections.
Call to action Near the end of the body One specific request: the next video, a comment question or a related link; not several requests in a row.
Ending 10 to 20 seconds Short; no ‘in conclusion…’, and show the end screen.

Audience retention tips that sources repeat

  • Hook in 5 to 10 seconds: YouTube’s official guide recommends this window to catch attention. Subscribr also says many viewers drop within the first 30 seconds.
  • Deliver value early: Do not keep the main point until the end. An open loop, meaning a hint of something that comes later, keeps the viewer.
  • Change the pace: Change the camera angle, use B-roll, put text on screen and change speaking speed. LongStories suggests having a ‘pattern interrupt’ every 60 to 90 seconds. Note: the figures from this source are its own claims and are not independently confirmed; treat them as a rough guide, not a rule.
  • Read the Audience Retention graph: Sudden drops show where you were boring. Repeat the high-retention parts in the next video. Details in click-through rate and audience retention.
  • Chapters: According to YouTube’s official guide, the first timestamp must be 00:00, at least three timestamps are needed and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds. Write the chapters in the video description. Read more: chapters, captions and transcripts.

Script and recording

Script: an outline, not dry text

YouTube’s official guide says a light script or just a few points is enough: start, middle, end, and notes for visuals and cutaways. Keep the tone like explaining to a friend. If you want help from AI, read using AI to write video scripts. The golden rule: AI drafts the outline, you bring the experience and opinion.

Recording: record each section separately

  • vidIQ recommends recording each section separately and adding B-roll for variety.
  • Record the hook several times in different tones; these 15 seconds matter more than the rest of the video.
  • For software tutorials, screen recording plus clear audio is enough. Example: creating programming tutorial content for YouTube.
  • Before recording, test for 10 seconds and listen to the audio with headphones.

Best editing software for long video

There is no single best software; the best is the one that fits your situation. The table below is based on the makers’ official pages and the Digital Filmmaker comparison.

Software Cost Strength Limitation Best for
DaVinci Resolve Free version; the Studio version is a one-time purchase (USD 295 on the maker site) Windows, Mac and Linux; color grading, audio (Fairlight) and professional editing; Studio adds smart tools such as text-based editing and Magic Mask Steeper learning curve; some features only in Studio People who want serious editing without a monthly subscription
Adobe Premiere Pro Monthly subscription Text-based editing, Enhance Speech, Auto Reframe, auto captions, teamwork and many plugins Recurring cost; generative features have a limited free quota Teams and users of the Adobe ecosystem
Final Cut Pro One-time purchase Fast timeline and fast export Mac only Mac users who do not want a subscription
Descript Free plan; paid plans for more features Editing from the text, removing filler words with one click, Studio Sound to remove noise Not suited to cinematic editing or visual effects Talking, tutorial and video-podcast videos
CapCut / Filmora CapCut is free with a paid section; Filmora is an annual subscription Simple and quick to start According to Digital Filmmaker, not deep enough for long projects (multicam, proxy, precise audio mixing) Beginners and shorter videos
YouTube Create and the Studio editor Free Fast cuts, effects, music from the Audio Library Limited features compared with professional software Starting from zero and light editing after upload

Which one should you choose?

  • New with zero budget: YouTube Create or the free version of DaVinci Resolve. (According to the source, the free Resolve supports up to UHD quality and 60 frames.)
  • Talking and tutorial videos: Descript cuts editing time because you work like editing text.
  • Mac and fast editing: Final Cut Pro.
  • A team or professional project: Premiere Pro.

Practical note: some foreign services have access or payment restrictions for users in Iran; make sure you can use them before paying. Free versions such as DaVinci Resolve and YouTube Create are enough to start.

Principles of editing a long video

  • Remove long pauses and repeated words and bring the strongest part forward (vidIQ’s recommendation).
  • Use only music and images you are licensed to use; the Audio Library in YouTube Studio is a safe option.
  • Always read the automatic captions and fix mistakes.
  • Watch the final export on your phone before uploading.

AI at every stage of long-form production

AI is good in long-form production when it takes over repetitive work and frees you for what a machine cannot do: experience, perspective and a connection with the audience. The table below shows tools by stage. Note that one source for this section is a sponsored article, so we only describe capabilities and do not quote prices.

Stage Example tools How they help Caution
Ideas and research ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini; vidIQ; Google Trends; Ask Studio in YouTube Studio Angles, audience questions, channel stats analysis Check any suggested idea against real YouTube search
Script and structure Text assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) A rough plan, several hook options, rewriting, titles and descriptions Add your own story and experience; fact-check the numbers
Audio Descript (Studio Sound), Premiere (Enhance Speech), DaVinci Resolve Studio (Voice Isolation), ElevenLabs Noise removal, better sound, voice-over and dubbing A realistic synthetic voice usually needs disclosure
Editing Descript, Premiere (text-based editing), Resolve Studio, YouTube Create conversational editing assistant Removing pauses and filler, cutting from text, pacing suggestions Approve the final pacing and feel of the video yourself
B-roll and visuals Runway, Pictory, VEED; Veo tools in Shorts Creating background clips, turning text into video Disclose realistic synthetic visuals; template-style repetitive video risks monetization
Captions and dubbing Premiere (Speech to Text and translation), YouTube automatic dubbing Multilingual captions and access to a global audience Review the text; availability differs by language and country
Thumbnail and title Thumbnail creation in Studio, A/B testing of titles and thumbnails Different versions and CTR measurement Decide by the data; AI thumbnail tools
Repurposing Opus Clip, VEED, Premiere (Auto Reframe) Making Shorts from a long video Do not add worthless clips; the originality update

The newest YouTube AI tools (Made on YouTube 2026)

According to media reports on the Made on YouTube event in September 2026, YouTube introduced several new features: a conversational editing assistant in Shorts and YouTube Create built on Gemini, thumbnail creation matched to a channel’s style, A/B testing on up to three cuts of a video for retention, Ask Studio expanding to the mobile app, and AI feedback on drafts that is still being tested. Real-time dubbing for live streams has also been announced for early 2027. Which feature is active for your channel and country is visible only in YouTube Studio. For a fuller list, read new YouTube features 2026 and using AI on YouTube.

The limit: AI help or inauthentic content?

Always remember two rules:

  • Disclosure of synthetic content: If a video contains a face, voice, scene or realistic event that was made with AI or heavily altered, and a viewer could think it is real, you must turn on the disclosure option when uploading.
  • Inauthentic content: Template-style, mass-produced videos with no added value, for example a synthetic voice over slides with no personal opinion or experience, can put monetization at risk. YouTube’s focus is on ‘low-value, mass production’, not on AI itself.

So use AI to speed up work, not to remove you from the video.

A 30-day plan for your first long video

When What to do Output
Week 1 Niche in one sentence, review 5 similar channels, set up the channel and verify your phone Niche, competitor list and a ready channel
Week 2 Find 10 ideas, choose one, write a light script and record section by section Recorded files and a video plan
Week 3 Edit, remove filler, add captions, make the thumbnail and chapters The first video (Unlisted)
Week 4 Watch on mobile, fix, publish, start the second video A published video and a second one in progress

After every video, review the stats and apply what you learned to the next video. The main goal in the first month is building the habit, not going viral.

Publishing and SEO for a long video

A good video without good packaging is not seen. Publishing checklist:

  • Title: Make a specific promise and include the main keyword. Full guide: YouTube SEO: titles, descriptions and tags.
  • Thumbnail: One focal point, high contrast and short text. vidIQ cites a study of 500 ‘trending’ videos in which about 72 percent had text on the image and the median text length was five words. Test on a phone size that it is readable.
  • Description: Write the first two lines usefully with the keyword, then add the chapters.
  • Chapters and captions: Following the rules above (start at 00:00, at least three chapters, each at least 10 seconds).
  • Cards and end screen: Take the viewer to the next video; playlists, cards and end screens.
  • Disclosure and copyright: Before publishing, check the ‘synthetic content’ settings and the music license.

What do we do after publishing?

  • In the first 48 hours, watch two metrics: click-through rate (CTR) and audience retention. The best case is a good CTR with good retention (Subscribr’s summary).
  • Check the Audience Retention graph for the first 30 seconds and find which sentence made viewers leave.
  • After 10 videos, compare three things: which topic, which title and thumbnail and which hook worked better (vidIQ’s suggestion).
  • To learn how to read the stats, read YouTube Studio analytics.

Common mistakes in long-form production

  1. Starting with a long intro and a logo instead of a hook.
  2. Not waiting for 10 videos, and giving up after the first one.
  3. Spending on an expensive camera and neglecting audio.
  4. Handing the whole video to AI and removing your personal experience.
  5. Not closing open loops; promising something that is never delivered.
  6. Ignoring chapters and captions.
  7. Buying or faking watch time; we covered the danger in buying YouTube watch time.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a long YouTube video?

There is no official, fixed definition that applies to all videos; usually everything that is not Shorts is called a long video. A few practical numbers: videos that reach 8 minutes can carry mid-roll ads, and an unverified account by default uploads up to 15 minutes. The right length is set by the topic, not by a magic number.

What equipment do I need to start long-form production?

According to YouTube’s official guide, a phone or a webcam is enough. Priority goes to clear audio, suitable light and a steady camera. Buy a heavier camera later, if needed.

What is the best editing software for a beginner?

YouTube Create and the free version of DaVinci Resolve are enough to start. If your videos are mostly talking, Descript saves time with text-based editing. If you have a Mac, Final Cut Pro is also a good option.

Can I make the whole video with AI?

Technically yes, but it carries monetization risk. Template-style, mass-produced videos with no added value fall under the ‘inauthentic content’ policy, and realistic synthetic content must be disclosed. It is better to use AI for planning, editing and repetitive work, and to keep your own experience and voice in the video.

How many videos a week should I publish?

vidIQ treats one video a week as a practical starting point. More important than the number is consistency, and reaching 10 videos so you can learn from the data.

Why should I verify the phone number on my YouTube account?

According to the official guide, account verification unlocks uploading videos longer than 15 minutes and custom thumbnails.

What are the conditions for video chapters?

According to YouTube’s guide page: the first timestamp must be 00:00, there must be at least three timestamps in the description and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long. Manual chapters take priority over automatic ones.

When can I judge the results after starting?

After about 10 videos. There is no guaranteed time for growth; the goal at this stage is to learn which topic, title, thumbnail and hook work better.

Conclusion

Long-form YouTube production is a learnable skill, not an innate talent. Write your niche in one sentence, start with a clean phone and clean audio, follow the structure of hook and chapters, edit with software that fits you, and use AI to speed up work, not to replace yourself. Test your first 10 videos and read the stats each time. If you would like to review your channel’s path with an expert, leave your number in the form below.
