YouTube Deepfake Detection: What Is Likeness Detection and How Do You Turn It On? (2026)

YouTube deepfake detection is no longer just a technical topic; for any creator whose face appears in videos, it is now a practical one. YouTube has a tool called Likeness Detection that scans newly uploaded videos and, if your face looks altered or AI-generated in one of them, shows it to you for review. The decision stays with you: request removal, or archive the video.

In this article you will read what the tool does, who can turn it on, how setup works, what happens to your data, and where voice detection stands. Everything comes from the official sources listed at the end; statuses were checked as of October 17, 2026.

Summary at a glance:

  • Likeness Detection is an “experimental” YouTube tool that checks new videos for altered or AI-generated faces of enrolled people; it works a bit like Content ID, but for faces.
  • According to the official guide, setup is only for people over 18, only for a channel Owner or Manager, and requires identity verification with a government-issued ID and a short video of your face.
  • Path: YouTube Studio on a computer, then Content detection, then Likeness, then Start now. Verification can take up to 5 days.
  • For now the tool detects faces only. Voice detection and a mobile-app version were announced, and reports say they are coming “later this year”.
  • The tool may not find every fake video, and sending a removal request does not guarantee removal; parody and satire are among the cases that may stay up.
  • The official guide says the feature is not available in some countries and does not publish a list; check your own Studio to see whether it is open to you.

What exactly is YouTube Likeness Detection?

According to YouTube’s help page, the tool scans each newly uploaded video for content in which the face of an enrolled person has been altered or generated with AI. Results are collected in a section of Studio and you review each one. YouTube itself describes it as similar to Content ID, except that instead of copyrighted music and video it looks for a face match.

One important point: the tool is introduced as “experimental”. It can miss altered videos, and seeing few or zero results is not necessarily a sign that something is broken; YouTube says that if unauthorized use is rare, that is normal.

Who can use it?

The conditions in the official guide are:

  • You must be over 18.
  • Only a channel Owner or Manager can set it up; Editors (including limited Editors) can review matches on behalf of an enrolled Owner or Manager and file privacy complaints.
  • You must complete identity verification with a government-issued ID and a short face video.
  • Every person who appears on camera and wants coverage must go through the same steps separately.

The tool was first limited to YouTube Partner Program members. According to Engadget, on May 16, 2026 YouTube announced it would open access to all creators over 18 “in the coming weeks”. The current help page does not mention a YPP requirement either. Even so, the rollout is gradual, and the option may not yet be visible on your channel.

Step-by-step setup

According to the official guide, setup is done from a computer:

  1. Open YouTube Studio.
  2. In the side menu go to Content detection, then Likeness, and click Start now.
  3. Agree to the use of biometric technology and submit a reference image of your face.
  4. Complete Google identity verification: a clear photo of your government-issued ID and a short video of your face. According to Engadget, this step continues by scanning a QR code with your phone.
  5. Wait for approval. YouTube says this can take up to 5 days, after which you receive a confirmation email.

If several people appear on camera on your channel, each of them needs a separate enrollment.

After setup: how to review detected videos

The review path in Studio is Content detection, then Likeness, then For review. You can filter the list by a video’s total views or a channel’s subscriber count, and click Review next to any item. For each video you have three options:

Option When to use it What happens
Likeness removal request (privacy) A video you believe shows an altered or synthetic version of your face and violates the privacy policy It follows the privacy complaint process; you are notified of the outcome by email
Copyright removal request Your original, copyrighted content was used without permission Consider fair use, public domain and similar exceptions before you submit
Move to archive You do not want to pursue the video for now, or it is not a problem The video leaves your review list but stays on YouTube; you can find it later in the Archived tab

After you submit a request, YouTube emails you the outcome, and you can retract the request from the link in that email. What matters is that YouTube states plainly that not everything will be removed; factors such as whether the content is parody or satire play a role.

A practical note: sometimes the list shows videos that are your own real footage re-uploaded by someone else. That is not covered by the privacy rules, but you can file a copyright removal request for it.

Privacy: what does YouTube do with your data?

Because this involves your face and ID, read this section before enrolling. According to the official guide:

  • For people who are not enrolled, face data is discarded immediately, and face detection is done only for enrolled people.
  • For enrolled people, a unique identifier, the verification video, your full legal name and a face template are stored, for up to 3 years after your last sign-in unless you withdraw consent or delete your account.
  • Turning the tool off deletes this information. ID details also remain in your Payments Profile, where you can view and delete them.
  • Your full legal name is shown next to videos with your face to authorized channel users.
  • Using your face and voice templates to improve detection models is optional and can be revoked in Studio.

To turn it off: Content detection, then Likeness, then Manage likeness detection, then Stop finding matches, then Stop. It can take up to 24 hours to take effect, and afterward you can no longer see detected videos.

What about voice?

For now the tool detects faces only. The official guide says YouTube aims to extend detection to audio and cites 2026 in its FAQ. At Made on YouTube (September 23, 2026), YouTube also announced extended protection for creators’ face and voice. According to Medianama, speaking-voice detection is being added “later this year”, will be combined with face detection to improve accuracy, and the tool is coming to the YouTube mobile app so you can enroll, receive alerts and act. So this part is announced; until you see it in your own Studio, do not count on it. It is also not yet clear whether the tool will flag a cloned voice when your face is not in the video.

Limits: what the tool does not do

  • It is not a guarantee. It is experimental and may miss an altered video. In that case use the privacy complaint process or send feedback.
  • It does not remove automatically. It only flags a case; you submit the removal request and the decision rests with YouTube.
  • Voice is not covered on its own (for now). According to Engadget, YouTube asks during the request whether your voice was also copied, but the tool does not detect voice by itself.
  • It is not open in every country. The guide says it is unavailable in some countries and publishes no list.

What should creators in Iran know?

YouTube has not published a list of supported countries, so we cannot say from the sources whether this tool is active for Iranian accounts. The simplest way is to check Studio: if you see Content detection and the Likeness section, the option is open to you. If not, that does not necessarily mean anything is wrong with your channel; access may simply not be active for your account yet.

Also, enrollment requires a government-issued ID. The help page does not say which documents are accepted. Read the privacy terms above before enrolling and continue only if you are comfortable; enrolling is optional.

Suggested next step

If your face appears often in your channel’s videos, this simple checklist helps:

  1. Today, check in Studio whether the Likeness option exists for your channel.
  2. If it does and you are over 18, read the privacy terms and decide whether to enroll.
  3. If you enroll, look at the For review section once a week.
  4. For each item, first decide whether the video is parody or satire, your own real footage, or a real fake; then pick one of the three actions.
  5. If you see a fake video the tool did not flag, go straight to the privacy complaint process.

Frequently asked questions

Is YouTube Likeness Detection free?

The help page we reviewed does not mention any fee. Terms may change, so check the official guide.

Do I have to be a YouTube Partner Program member?

The current help page does not mention a YPP requirement, and Engadget reported that access is opening to all creators over 18. The rollout is gradual, and it may not yet be visible on your channel.

Does the tool remove fake videos automatically?

No. It flags possible matches and you submit the removal request. YouTube says not everything is removed; parody and satire, for example, may stay.

Is my voice detected too?

Not on its own, for now. Voice detection has been announced and, according to reports, is coming later this year. Until then, use the privacy complaint process for an altered voice.

What if I enroll and change my mind?

You can choose Stop finding matches under Manage likeness detection. According to the guide, turning it off deletes the stored information, and it can take up to 24 hours to take effect.

  • مسیر فعال‌سازی: YouTube Studio روی رایانه ← Content detection ← Likeness ← Start now.

Likeness Detection

مسیر بررسی در Studio این است: Content detection ← Likeness ← For review.

Likeness Detection
